New Heat: G Herbo - Survivor's Remorse

Image
Chicago rapper G Herbo is making news for all the right reasons. His fifth album, Survivor's Remorse , gives a glimpse into what it was like growing up in the dangerous streets of Chicago. Mark Braboy gives his insight on what he thought about the album altogether in his article for Rolling Stone. The title itself is a clear indication of what trauma has done to G Herbo's life. In his music, he tells stories of the many losses he has taken from the past ten plus years. The double album features appearances from prominent music stars such as Young Thug, Future and Gunna. The main thing I enjoyed from this album is the features from his children Yoshon and Essex. This isn't normal when both children are under the age of three years old, which gives me the impression that he is trying to set his children up for success. The album itself is a pure depiction of the violence and the heartbreak that comes as a result of staying in a city like Chicago.

Curious Case of Young Thug & YSL

Image
A few months ago, Grammy award-winning artist Young Thug and his record label, YSL, were indicted on state RICO charges in Georgia. As a result of this, the Hip-Hop community has shifted in a major way. One of the most prominent labels in the rap industry is looked at as a dangerous street gang in the city of Atlanta. Recently, Young Thug seems to catch a break in his case. In Tyler Fingert's  article , he discusses how the DA over Young Thug's case has asked for the trial to be delayed. While this doesn't exactly prove his innocence or guilt, it allows more time for he and his co-defendants to better prepare for trial. Although he has been in jail while awaiting trial, his fanbase has only been growing since his time of being arrested. With the trial now being slated for March 27th instead of the original January 7th date, the campaign to free Young Thug and his labelmates will continue to grow even more.

Has Kanye Gone Too Far?

Image
In recent years Kanye West has made headlines for many things. From his music to his personal life, he has always been unique from his counterparts in the industry. From supporting Donald Trump presidency to running for president himself, Kanye doesn't limit himself to anything. In recent news , Kanye did something that's looked at as the final straw for most people. He recently was seen wearing a white lives matter shirt to Paris fashion week. This comes after he called the Black Lives Matter a scam. This caused an outrage in the black community due to the boldness of his recent actions. Although Kanye is a black man himself, he seems to go against the ideologies that most black people share in the black community. This causes a disconnect between the people who were originally rooting for Kanye to succeed. Kanye is only showcasing his true colors for the world to see. While it may be disappointing to say, the Kanye most people initially loved will never be the same again.

Hip Hop Journalism for Amateurs

Image
Many people wonder what exactly a Hip-Hop journalist does. Hip-Hop journalists write about the many things in Hip-Hop culture that's popular now. This includes fashion, music, and the culture. Many times, when a song becomes popular it's presented by dance with a dance with the assistance of Tik Tok. Tik Toks are used to showcase short videos that can are shared across the world. With Tik Tok, artists can get their music out to the world with just a simple dance challenge. In writer and blogger's Charles K's article titled  "How To Be A Hip Hop Blogger ", he lists the steps to take in order to become a successful journalist in the world of Hip-Hop. Anyone who plans on becoming a journalist should definitely look at what he wrote. The advice he gave included being original, reading a lot and researching thoroughly. The main characteristic that stuck to me was being original. Being original can separate you from your peers. Nobody likes to look at something that

Origins to Hip Hop Journalism

For many years, journalism has been essential to the everyday lives of countless people. Journalism helps consumers get information in the most accurate way possible. In recent years, Hip-Hop has become one of the most prominent music genres in the world. In Dean Van Nyguyen's article  he discussed how Hip-Hop made its way into the journalism field. The article starts with giving props to journalist Greg Tate. Tate is regarded as being the first journalist to focus on the genre of Hip-Hop. He first started his career in the year 1981 covering various topics in the genre. He started off being influenced by some of the works of Langston Hughes, which as a result allowed him to properly get his thoughts across in a literary manner. From reviews of music to columns on artists, this served as a way to keep regular fans in tune with their favorite artists. As a result of this, Grant has inspired a plethora of Hip-Hop outlets that still exist today.
